The Spirit of Empowering: A reflection for Thy Kingdom Come

This Thursday 14th May 2026 marks the start of Thy Kingdom Come – a global prayer movement inviting Christians from all denominations around the world to pray for people to get to know Jesus. This happens annually between Ascension and Pentecost, and runs this year until 24th May.

Our team recently used the Thy Kingdom Come resources as a reflection exercise. You can download the prayer journal here to guide your own prayers during this season.

The Spirit of Empowering

We looked at Day 8 of the Thy Kingdom Come prayer journal, which is about the spirit of empowering. It says:

‘The spirit of the Lord is on me because He has sent me to preach good news to the poor.’ [Luke 4:18a]

The Kingdom of God is the difference the world longs for. Where the poor receive what they don’t have, the blind are given sight, the prisoners are set free, the lost are found, the lonely are given family, and the plight of the suffering is healed.

What might the Kingdom of God look like for single people?

As a team, we reflected on what the Kingdom of God might look like for single people. God brought to us words like: belonging, accepted, loved and healed.

The church should be the place where the Kingdom of God is being modelled and brought to earth – and this is why we do our work. So that church can be a place of belonging, acceptance, loving and healing for single people right now.

What do you think the Kingdom of God might look like for those who are single?

The spirit of the Lord is on me because He has sent me to preach good news to the poor.
— Luke 4:18

A prayer for single people

The Thy Kingdom Come reflection ends with a prayer from Clement of Rome, who was himself single, like many important figures in our faith! We have adapted this into a prayer for single people.

We encourage you to pray this during this global season of prayer – to bring the Kingdom of God closer to the single people in your lives.

Lord, be the helper and protector of those who walk alone
Strengthen the single in times of loneliness
Have mercy on the weary, lift up the discouraged
Appear to those who long for companionship
Heal wounded hearts
Restore those who feel forgotten or overlooked
Guide those who are searching for direction
Provide for those in need
Free those bound by fear or despair
Raise up the sick, comfort the faint-hearted
And grant peace, purpose, and steadfast hope to everyone who looks to you.
Amen.

The above prayer is adapted from Clement of Rome:

‘We beseech thee, Master, to be our helper and protector. Save the afflicted among us; have mercy on the lowly; raise up the fallen; appear to the needy; heal the ungodly; restore the wanderers of Thy people; feed the hungry; ransom our prisoners; raise up the sick; comfort the faint-hearted. Amen.’ [Clement of Rome, 1st Century]
