Seeking a part-time Campaigner...

3rd April 2017

Campaigner sought for Single Friendly Church

We’re advertising for a part-time campaigner.  You know our aim.  It is to change the churches’ thinking about single people.  This is a major culture transformation for many churches and we are seeking someone who would love to get stuck in to helping us. We know it won’t happen overnight - or even perhaps in one generation.  But it is time to start. Without such a change, the ageing church will die through natural demographics unless there is an extraordinary level of evangelism.

Either way we need to reach out to single people, engage them and include them fully into our communities of faith.  It happens in many places - but the majority of single adults tell us not for them. We want to learn from those who do it well and transfer that knowledge to others.

Job Description: Campaigner

2 to 3 days a week, Initial one year contract, starting June 2017

The Opportunity:

We are looking for a campaigner for a single friendly church.  The successful candidate will combine campaigning and networking skills combined with strong writing and speaking ability.  He or she will also have an interest in and knowledge of the British churches.

Background Information:

We didn't mean to start a campaign.  It began with a survey of 3,000 single Christians.  The results were overwhelmingly clear - that many single people don’t feel fully included in their churches and as a result there are far fewer attending.  Although 40% of adults in GB are single (neither married nor cohabiting), only 1 in 3 in the church are. And they appear to be leaving at a faster rate as churches brand themselves as family-friendly.

And yet there really are simple steps leaders can make so their churches better places for single people which we describe on www.singlefriendlychurch.com. That is what we are about.

The Role:

The successful candidate would be organising the overall campaign, developing direct contacts, building relationships and networks to encourage churches to include and inspire single people.

Use of social media and promoting the resources available through SingleFriendlychurch.com and social networks would play an important part.

With the guidance of the Directors, your primary responsibilities will be to:

  • Create links with churches, church organisations and leaders to create stronger awareness and to convince them of the important benefits to their churches.
  • Arrange and attend events and creating speaking opportunities and events to take the campaign forward.
  • Support individuals in their local churches and areas who want to encourage singles in their area.
  • Manage or engage in social media, including writing guest blogs, supporting a Facebook group and writing a regular newsletter.
  • Build a network of people who support the aims and who may be willing to help in some practical way.
  • Regularly engage and brief the Directors.

The Right Candidate:

Experience:

  • 3+ Experience of working on successful social campaigns (in either the private or voluntary sector).
  • Experience with social media and digital engagement.

Personal attributes:

  • Somebody who can communicate with enthusiasm and commitment
  • Good at building partnerships and networks
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Experience of writing website blogs and using social media
  • Good understanding of the way UK churches work
  • Ability to work collaboratively on projects
  • Able to spot opportunities and act on initiative

Remuneration dependent on qualifications and experience in the region of £32-40k pro rata.

Working arrangements:

Finding the right person is more important to us than specifying strict specifications and boundaries for the role.  The Directors are flexible and willing to consider someone working from home (with a minimum one day a fortnight in London) or in London office, either employed or self-employed.

To apply:

We welcome applications from Christians of any tradition committed to our aims.

Please send your CV to david@singlefriendlychurch.com  with a brief covering letter of explaining why you are interested in the role and how you meet the candidate criteria.   Closing date has been extended to May 15th 2017.

No agencies please. Apologies that we can only respond to suitable candidates.
